Walla Walla Public Schools is teaming with area realtors to help those in need through the “Care and Share” annual food drive. There are many ways for parents, students and staff to get involved. All donations help the Blue Mountain Action Council Food Bank. Demand remains high. Peter Swant is the project coordinator: pswant@cbfr.biz

Here’s how you can help:
- “Fill the Bus” drive at area grocery stores: Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Pick a section of town to distribute bags to area homes and then collect them the following day (Oct. 19 & 20)
- Donate food at all district schools (collection barrels are now in place)

Superintendent Mick Miller invites you to join him for a behind the scenes look at Walla Walla Public Schools. The Superintendent’s Patron Tour program is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the district, ask questions, tour local schools and enjoy lunch together.

This month’s Cadet of the Month winner was Cadet Private Adam Grau. He excelled in both his uniform appearance and his knowledge answers, according to Lt. Col. Bill Bialozor, Senior Army Instructor for the Walla Walla High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Grau was promoted immediately to Cadet Private First Class for his achievement.  

The other nominees were Cadet Private Tom Paul from Bravo Company, and Cadet Private Alex Dean from Charlie Company. The top cadet was selected from the candidates who were inspected and examined in oral interviews by a board of four advanced cadets. Each cadet went through a uniform inspection and a question-and-answer panel in front of the three company first sergeants and the battalion's command sergeant major. 
 
“After the board tallied the points and the winner was clear, we held a ceremony to promote the winning cadet one rank higher, to recognize him for his hard work and personal success,” said Bialozor.
 
Wa-Hi JROTC Cadets participate in the program to develop leadership skills and to strive to be better citizens in society. Many cadets compete with drill, marksmanship, and physical training teams as well as attend the class. These cadets get to travel to and compete in drill meets at 16 other schools in the Cascade Division that include Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy Cadet programs.

Walla Walla High School volleyball team is sponsoring PINK NIGHT Tuesday, October 22 as they take on the Richland Bombers and raise money for breast cancer awareness. Freshmen, sophomore and junior varsity teams all play at 5:30 p.m. and the Blue Devil varsity begin at 7 p.m. 

PINK items, such as beads, pins, pompoms and more will be sold at the game. Volleyball players are currently selling PINK shirts to support Breast Cancer awareness. 

“Find your favorite player and help support the cause by purchasing a shirt from them,” said Parent Volunteer Karen Carman. T-shirts may also be purchased from the Wa-Hi ASB office and a limited number of shirts will be available for purchase at the game. All proceeds from the event go to St Mary Medical Center Breast Cancer Special Needs Fund.

“And don’t forget to WEAR PINK,” said Carman. “Let’s dig PINK for a cure together!”

"We want to reach out to all veterans in our community," said cadet Lt. Col. Zach Chlipala, Blue Devil cadet battalion commander. "We hope they and their families will attend our annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday morning, Nov. 8. This year we're trying to expand the way we recognize and honor our veterans. We'd love to get photos from area veterans to use in our video that will run during the ceremonies."

The Jr. Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets, along with the ASB staff are already hard at work organizing the event to honor those who have served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, whether active, reserve, national guard or retired, according to the Senior Army Instructor at Wa-Hi.

"Our cadets this year are working hard to gather photos of veterans, any photo would be a great start, but we're hoping to get 'then and now' images of every veteran, back when they were in the service and another more recent photo, too. We can accept images by email, or hard copy prints that we can scan and return immediately to the veterans or their families," said Lt. Col. Bill Bialozor, WWHS JROTC SAI.

Parenting Teens Together, a confidential support group for parents of teens, is meeting this Thursday October 17 at Green Park Elementary School. The discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the topic being general sharing and resource information.The discussion will encourage sharing struggles, successes, and experiences with local resources that involve teenagers.
 
The group meets on the third Thursday of each month and invites guest speakers to address topics of special interest. Meetings are lecture-based with an emphasis on discussion, Q & A and open sharing.  The meetings are not limited to the main topic and local resources will be available for all parents who attend.  The meetings are at Green Park School and begin at 7:30 p.m.

Camp Fire Walla Walla afterschool program campers wrote, designed and presented a puppet show to stand up against bullying.  This was part of Unity Day on October 9th sponsored by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center.  Kids at After School Camps took the “Kids Against Bullying” pledge which states:
