Superintendent Jordan reorganizes district leadership team

After serving five years as Assistant Superintendent of Personnel, Laure Quaresma is transferring to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning in a reorganization move directed by Superintendent Dr. Bill Jordan. Quaresma will direct the district’s Teacher/Principal Evaluation Project, new teacher induction programs and principal support functions. Quaresma will also be responsible for researching, developing and implementing innovative programs to support academic achievement. No decisions have been made regarding a replacement for Quaresma in the Personnel Department.

In another district office leadership move, Dr. Jordan announced Dr. Tracy Williams will assume the permanent position of Director of Curriculum. Williams will replace Dr. Linda Boggs who resigned her position in February. Williams has been serving as Interim Director of Special Education following the resignation of Special Education Director Dr. Karen Lehman earlier this school year. Williams, who will report to Quaresma, will also direct the district’s Bilingual, Title One and Learning Assisted Programs (LAP) and other grant programs. Williams has been in education for 32 years, including 20 years in various teaching and leadership positions. She spent six years as Director of Special Programs in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the Spokane Public School District, two years as Director of Curriculum for ESD 123 and four years as Assistant Professor and Department Chair for Curriculum and Instruction at Seattle Pacific University.

The district will begin a search for a new director to lead the Special Education Department. The Special Education Director will also report to Quaresma.

Jordan has appointed Business Office Administrative Assistant Susie Golden to assume the Superintendent’s Administrative Assistant position which is open June 1 following the retirement of longtime assistant Elizabeth “Betsy” Adkins. Golden has served as Adkins’ backup for several years. No decisions have been made regarding a replacement for Golden in the Business Office.

District funding helps put Wa-Hi track project on starting block

Funding for Phase One of a new track at Walla Walla High School cleared an important hurdle Tuesday night as the school board approved a request to use $150,000 from the district’s reserve for the project and another $100,000 for placement in a contingency fund should construction bids come in over estimates. The total cost of Phase One, track only, is estimated at $830,000 according to the project architect. Big Blue Boosters, led by Class of 1983 graduate Scott Krivoshein, has organized a fundraising effort to replace the 50-year-old cinder Wa-Hi track which is no longer suitable for physical education classes or the school’s successful Track & Field program. Currently, Track & Field practice and events are held at the aging Martin Field facility at the Borleske Stadium site.

Although the district funding is a critical step forward, Krivoshein reports the project still needs approximately $67,000 to meet the fundraising goal for Phase One. He said the plan is for funds to come from private donors, local trusts, Walla Walla Public Schools and the Big Blue Boosters. Krivoshein says the goal is to break ground this summer and be completed this fall if the additional funds are raised in time.

“This is my hometown and as a graduate of Walla Walla High School, I’m confident our community will step-up and support our kids,” Krivoshein said. “This is your chance build a legacy in Walla Walla.”

Executive Director of Business Services Ted Cohan says the track project is a unique partnership with the community.

“The Walla Walla High School track project represents the collaborative spirit of Walla Walla as private fundraising efforts have been blended with district funds to provide a much needed facility for our students,” said Cohan. “We are very appreciative of Scott Krivoshein, the Big Blue Boosters and all those who have supported this project for the benefit of Walla Walla youth.”

Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers to visit SEA-TECH

Students and staff at the Southeast Area Technical Skills Center (SEA-TECH) will have a special guest Wednesday, March 11 as Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers tours the new facility from 8 to 9 a.m. (NOTE TIME CHANGE). High school students taking classes at the Southeast Area Technical Skills Center located on the campus of Walla Walla Community College are immersed in the latest technology and trends in the world of Digital Media, Manufacturing and Welding, Sustainable Energy Technology specializing in Electrical Systems and Health Sciences. SEA-TECH is a branch campus of the Kennewick School District’s Tri-Tech Skills Center. Students from Walla Walla and all the partner districts consisting of Dayton, Waitsburg, Touchet, Prescott and College Place attend a three hour morning or afternoon block schedule at SEA-TECH.

Volunteer of the Year nominations now accepted

Walla Walla Public Schools is now accepting nominations for this year’s Art Regier Volunteer of the Year recipients. Each year hundreds of amazing volunteers support educational programs and activities. Art Regier Volunteers of the Year will be recognized at the April 21 school board meeting.

Nomination packets must be returned to Mark Higgins (mhiggins@wwps.org / 364 S. Park St.) in the Communications Department by March 15. The nomination process is simple. Complete the fillable PDF form available on the district’s website under volunteering -- www.wwps.org. Include up to three letters of support. Packets can be emailed, delivered in person or mailed.

Lincoln High School student shines at regional art show

Lincoln High School senior Adrianna "Anna" May recieved four awards at the 42nd Annual Educational Service District 123 Art Show at Columbia Basin College in Pasco March 4. She received the Judge's Choice award, Superintedent's Choice award, honorable mention, and a $1,000 scholarship from Central Washington University. The winning piece she submitted was entitled, "The Places We Go."

“This is a surreal piece that uses odd proportions and a light dreamy theme,” said Lincoln High School Principal Marci Knauft. “This work was inspired by the relationship Anna and her brother share. They have moved many times thoughout their lives and are really close. She did this painting to depict the bond they share.”

Lincoln High School submissions:
- Luke Martin, Lincoln HS 10th grade, submitted the piece "Don't Lose Your Way" done in tempura and acrylic.

- Larissa Teal, Lincoln HS 9th grade, created a 3-D piece using sticks and glue entitled, "Ostrich on the Run."

- Daisha Jackson, Lincoln HS 10th grade, submitted the piece "One Mind, Two Sides" using watercolor and yarn.

- Anna May, Lincoln HS 12th grade submitted two pieces of art. The first was entitled "The Places, We Go" and was done in watercolor. The second was done in ink and colored pencil and was entitled, "The Black and White."

Wa-Hi Girls basketball team loses quarterfinal game

The Walla Walla High School girls basketball team lost to Todd Beamer 55-48 in the state quarterfinals at Tacoma. The girls face Bothell at 2 p.m. today. The winner advances to the Saturday 4th/6th place game at 9:30 a.m. at the Tacoma Dome. Good luck Blue Devils!

Lincoln High School plans garage sale fundraiser

Walla Walla High School hosting final Jr. ROTC meet of year

The Junior ROTC cadets from Walla Walla High School are hosting the last region-wide drill and marksmanship meet of the school year tomorrow, Saturday, March 7. The event is free and open to the public. Events kick off in the Wa-Hi gymnasium complex at 8 a.m.

"Our Wa-Hi teams that will be competing include the Armed and Unarmed Drill Teams, two Color Guards, the Physical Training team, and the precision rifle team," Bialozor said.

Teams from Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs around the Pacific Northwest will be competing in their service dress uniforms. Events are evaluated for precision, bearing, accuracy, timing and collective excellence. Marksmanship program competitors on hand at this event will include precision team shooters who have participated in various meets, including one Wa-Hi cadet who set two new Army JROTC records and recently won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, where he will compete on the West Point rifle team.

Wa-Hi selects Jr. ROTC Cadet of the Month for March

The Walla Walla High School JROTC “Blue Devils” Cadet Battalion has selected its “Cadet of the Month” for March 2015 and rewarded his achievement with an immediate promotion.

Cadet Pvt. 1st Class Benjamin Bialozor was promoted to his new rank after he won the top spot with a total score of 594 points, according to the presiding official on the board.

The top Cadet was selected from three candidates who were inspected and examined in oral interviews by a board of eight advanced cadets, according to Lt. Col. Bill Bialozor, Senior Army Instructor for the Walla Walla High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

Private Bialozor said that he joined JROTC because he vowed not to make the same mistake that his sister Kaylee did, which was not joining the program her freshman year. He enjoys reading and plans on going to college to become a writer.

“This is a rigorous competition and challenges every candidate. His confidence was beyond outstanding," said Cadet Command Sgt. Maj. Jerome Minster, president of the selection board.

First runner up was Cadet Pvt. 1st Class Bethany Roulston of Foxtrot Company, whose strongest suit was her reporting-out procedure with 564 points. Second runner up was Cadet Pvt. 1st Class Byrch Hurley of Delta Company, whose strongest suit was his reporting-in procedure with 473 points.

Wa-Hi JROTC Cadets participate in the program to develop leadership skills and to strive to be better citizens in society. Many cadets compete with drill, marksmanship, and physical training teams as well as attend the class. These cadets get to travel to and compete in drill meets at 16 other schools in the Cascade Division that include Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy cadet programs.

Deadline approaches for Altrusa Spelling Bee

The deadline for applications for the Altrusa International of Walla Walla annual Spelling Bee is Wednesday, March 11. The event, for third, fourth and fifth grade students, takes place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the SEA-TECH Skills Center on the Walla Walla Community College campus and is open to the first 100 students who return entry forms.  Prizes are given to the top contestants in each grade level competition. More information and entry forms are available on the Walla Walla Public School website in the A to Z section under Altrusa Spelling Bee.

Safe Sitter® classes offered

Walla Walla General Hospital has become a Registered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site and will offer a comprehensive training program for young teens ages 11 and up. The class trains students to handle emergencies when caring for younger children and provides them with tools needed to stay home alone safely.
“Although WWGH has offered babysitting classes for many years, we’ve chosen to work with Safe Sitter® to ensure that young teens are prepared for situations that might arise when they are home alone watching younger children,” says Sharryl Toews, community health education specialist.

To graduate from the Safe Sitter® course and receive a completion card, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test that indicates their mastery of key concepts and safety skills.

Students who complete the Safe Sitter® program gain confidence and learn how, why and where injuries can happen so they can be prevented. The Safe Sitter® program follows American Heart American Heart Association standards for rescue skills as well as instruction in first aid techniques from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Students are taught infant and child choking rescue and infant, child and adult CPR. They also learn how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior, how to run their own babysitting business, as well as issues of online and cell phone safety.

The Safe Sitter® courses are $35 each, and will be held two consecutive Sundays from 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. in the WWGH Auditorium on: March 22 & 29, June 7 & 14, and August 2 & 9, 2015.

American Red Cross seeks volunteers for fire risk outreach program

The American Red Cross is looking for local volunteers to participate in an outreach program aimed at improving home fire safety. Neighborhoods in Walla Walla have been identified as high risk for home fire injuries and fatalities. The American Red Cross has made a five year commitment to reach out and provide preparedness information and free installed smoke detectors to homes that do not have smoke detectors or working smoke detectors. This community event takes place over three days in partnership with the local fire department. Volunteers can choose which or all events they want to be part of.

- March 28: Canvassing, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- April 11: Installs, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration for Great Explorations due by Saturday

On Saturday, March 14, Great Explorations in Education will present a science, technology, engineering and math adventure for 5th through 8th grade girls at Whitman College from 8:20 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.

Registration forms should be mailed by March 7. The sooner the registration form is sent in, the more likely it is that girls can be in workshops with their friends. Also, early registrations are more likely to get first choice of workshops.

Girls will have the opportunity to attend three workshops offering informal, hands-on experience with careers that utilize science, technology, engineering and math. These workshops will give the girls an opportunity to meet and form personal contacts with women in these exciting careers. There will be 24 workshops to choose from, with intriguing titles such as Neigh, Moooo, Ruff, Meow; Snakes for Supper?; What’s Shakin’?; The Telltale Heart; Bugs-R-Us and Getting Cheeky. Topics include ocean chemistry, forensic biology, robotics, 3-D printing, geology, astronomy, veterinary medicine, neurobiology, pharmacy, architecture and many more.

The highlight of this year’s event will be the appearance of Whitman College Associate Professor of Biology, Dr. Leena Knight, who will be the keynote speaker at 1:10 p.m. in Cordiner Hall.
